Privacy Policy

PropMap (“we”, “us”, “our”) provides a web application for viewing South African property boundaries, extents and Surveyor-General codes. We respect your privacy and process personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA). This policy explains what we collect, why, and your rights.

Who we are

Information we collect

Account information — your email address, and (if you sign in with Google) your name and profile basics. If you register with a password, we store only a salted hash, never the password itself.
Your content — properties you save, notes, selections and branding settings you create, so they sync across your devices.
Billing information — if you subscribe, payments are processed by PayFast. We receive confirmation of your plan and status; we do not store your card or bank details.
Usage & technical data — basic, aggregate usage (such as export counts) and standard technical data (IP address, device/browser) needed to run and secure the service.

We do not collect or store the personal details of property owners. Cadastral boundaries, extents and SG codes are public data sourced from the Chief Surveyor-General (Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development).

How we use your information

To provide, sync and secure the service and your account.
To process subscriptions and send service-related email (e.g. password reset, receipts).
To provide support and to maintain and improve the product.
To comply with our legal obligations.

Our lawful bases under POPIA are your consent, the performance of our contract with you, and our legitimate interests in operating the service.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run PropMap, under appropriate safeguards:

Google — for “Sign in with Google” authentication.
PayFast — for payment processing.
Resend — for sending transactional email.
Mapbox, Esri and NGI (DALRRD) — for map imagery; and the Chief Surveyor-General services for cadastral data.

Some providers may process data outside South Africa. Where they do, we rely on their safeguards and applicable transfer protections.

Retention

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal information, except where we must retain certain records to meet legal or accounting obligations.

Your rights

Under POPIA you have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to ask us to correct or delete it, to object to certain processing, and to lodge a complaint. You can manage and delete your account from within the app, or contact us at hello@propmap.co.za. You may also complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa).

Security

We protect your information with encryption in transit, hashed passwords, access controls and other reasonable technical and organisational measures. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your data safe.

Cookies and local storage

PropMap sets one cookie: propmap_sid, which keeps you signed in. It is HttpOnly, Secure and SameSite=Lax, it only exists once you sign in, and it disappears when you sign out. It is strictly necessary for the Service to work, so it is always on.

Separately, the app keeps a small amount of data in your browser's local storage:

Your own work — saved properties, drawings, imported layers, your last map position, and whether you have seen the welcome dialog. This never leaves your device except when you are signed in and it syncs to your account.
An anonymous usage id — a random string with no connection to your name or email, sent with a first-party analytics beacon so we can count how features are used. This one is optional. We ask on your first visit, and nothing is collected until you say yes. Choosing "Essential only" stops the beacons and deletes the id.

You can change your mind at any time under Settings → Usage analytics in the app. Turning it off deletes the identifier as well as stopping the collection.

There are no third-party trackers, no advertising cookies and no cross-site tracking anywhere in PropMap, and the landing site you are reading now sets no cookies at all. We do not sell or share personal information.

We also send a small error report when something in the app breaks — the error message, where in the app it happened, and nothing else. It carries no identifier and is used only to fix faults.

Children

PropMap is intended for business users and is not directed at children under 18.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here and change the “last updated” date.
